CLEAN-Gas is a “European Joint Doctorate” programme for highly motivated young scientists, where state-of-the-art research is combined with a comprehensive training programme. The network is funded by the European Community through the Horizon 2020 Actions. The European Commission wants to make research careers more attractive to young people and therefore offers early-stage researchers the opportunity to improve their research skills, join established research teams, and enhance their career prospects via the so-called Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks.
The scientific goal of CLEAN-Gas is to develop new experimental and numerical tools for improving natural gas combustion in innovative burners
CLEAN-Gas Project, coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, has started on January 1st, 2015 and will be carried out over a period of 4 years. The network consists of 4 academic partner institutions, 3 industrial partners and T.I.M.E. Association from 4 different countries in Europe.
Due to its widespread availability and its environmental and technological benefits, natural gas is of great interest to the European Energy policy. Therefore, a deep understanding and high-level training in the experimental and numerical tools for investigating natural gas combustion in new burners are of upmost importance for future developments.
CLEAN-Gas proposes excellence with a multi-domain approach for research projects in conjunction with industrial partners and innovative education, by offering an extensive and prospective view of research to PhD candidates in order to prepare them for their future career in the new challenging context of the Society of Knowledge.
Main outcomes of the program are skilled people, scientific and transferable knowledge. In addition, a closer community and network for Natural Gas combustion will be created, becoming attractive for PhD candidates and for young/senior researchers.
One of the originalities is to link the different teams together with four additional industrial partners in order to suggest and develop new complementary perspectives combining mathematics and physics, chemistry and fluid mechanics, computation and experiments, all these different approaches aiming at a final real scale application for industrial use by companies.
One innovative aspect of the program is to offer an extensive and prospective view of research to candidates with the goal to prepare them to become the researchers of tomorrow. The candidates' education will not be only a scientific research program, but also instruction on how to develop their understanding of research, their own responsibilities and their professional abilities.
Mobility is essential for research. Candidates will spend a first year mainly dedicated to their learning and knowledge development in one or the two co-tutelle institutions, followed by 1 or 2 semesters of intensive exchanges between the two. Then candidates will take a step back during the last semester for the synthesis of the work.
