The CLEAN-Gas Network is supported by the European Commission (H2020) under the sub-programme Marie Curie Actions. 15 early stage researchers (ESR) will obtain training in all relevant topics of the field:

  • fundamentals of combustion
  • experimental and diagnostic techniques applied to combustion
  • detailed kinetic modelling of hydrocarbon fuel combustion

The training will be provided by 4 universities and 4 industrial partners, from different countries in Europe. The network is coordinated by Politecnico di Milano (Italy).

The CLEAN-Gas partnership has emerged from the need to put together complementary expertise and knowledge to enrich the research environment of combustion and to set up the conditions for innovative breakthroughs in combustion of natural gas. In particular, the CLEAN-Gas network proposes for the first time an integrated approach of the natural gas combustion in industrial processes, covering experiments and numerical simulations, including detailed chemistry and computational fluid dynamics applied to real complex geometries.

The academic partners have different expertise in complementary fields related to combustion of Natural Gas, from detailed chemistry in simple geometry to simple chemistry in complex geometry. The partners, in cooperation with the industrial sector, will develop a global approach for the combustion challenges for industrial applications, both a numerical and experimental basis. The partnership will develop a complementary area of expertise both in numerical simulations and experimental investigations. To achieve these large-scale investigations, some main areas will be complementary investigated and mutually validated: mathematical approach (Graph model, Principal Component Analysis and tabulated chemistry), 3D numerical simulation and modelling (CFD, Numerical models, Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, Large Eddy Simulation and Direct Numerical Simulations), experimental investigation and measurements of laminar and turbulent flames in complex configurations.

The industrial partners will participate in the program for the scientific and professional training. In particular, they participate in the policy of the partnership regarding research activities in connection with the relative needs and to the quality of the program. They will propose some research projects for PhD candidates and also mentor them in their research work. They will also participate in the training, especially the employability, entrepreneurship, innovation and soft skills aspects during the Winter School and will regularly evaluate the research work of candidates.
